Amodei dined at the White House two days after losing to the Pentagon

Dario Amodei had dinner with Donald Trump at the White House on Saturday evening, their first one-on-one meeting. Two days earlier a federal appeals court in Washington had upheld the Pentagon's blacklisting of his company by a 2-1 vote. The two events are 48 hours apart.

How the two men arrived at the same table:

• 5 March: the Pentagon labels Anthropic a supply-chain risk after talks over military use of Claude break down.
• 28 August: Judge Rita Lin rules the designation illegal, arbitrary and capricious, and a denial of due process.
• 12 September: Amodei publishes We Must Pace the Frontier, a three-step plan to cap how fast capabilities grow.
• 25 September: a federal appeals court in Washington upholds the blacklisting 2-1.

The Pentagon designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk because the company refused to let Claude be used for autonomous weapons or surveillance. Judge Lin found that Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth's decision was retaliation for protected speech and that Anthropic had been denied due process. The appeals court disagreed, and the label stands. Anthropic says it has cost the company billions in lost business and damaged its reputation ahead of an expected IPO. The designation has now been in force for 206 days.

What Amodei brought to dinner

Amodei arrived carrying a plan that needs the person across the table. Step one of We Must Pace the Frontier is a commitment Anthropic makes alone: embedding third-party evaluators inside the company with badges, workstations, devices and visibility into systems on par with its own risk teams, to confirm safety commitments are honoured and review how models are trained. Step two asks the leading labs in democratic countries to agree shared safety benchmarks and speed limits on capability, which requires antitrust waivers that only a government can grant. Step three requires China.

The tension, in published numbers

The plan sits against numbers from the same company. Anthropic has booked $517bn of compute, the largest commitment anyone in the industry has disclosed and enough to cover both training and inference, while its own alignment lead puts catastrophic risk above 10%. Anthropic is asking the frontier to slow down and has reserved more of its hardware than anyone else. Anthropic published both numbers itself.

Across the table, Trump has called the AI backlash a Democratic hoax, offered no evidence for it, and wants the technology rebranded as super intelligence. His administration has begun standing up an AI Force. Other officials have been friendlier to Anthropic than the Pentagon has, which is part of why the dinner happened at all.

Neither side has said what was discussed. The record holds this much: a chief executive who needs antitrust waivers from Washington sat down with a president whose Defence Department has spent 206 days calling his company a national security risk, two days after a court agreed it could keep doing so. Saturday Night Live opened its season the same evening with a sketch about Amodei.
