Anthropic pitches investors a $30 trillion market ahead of IPO
Anthropic wants investors to see a market worth more than $30 trillion ahead of its planned IPO. The company is expected to put its total addressable market at that figure, the Journal reports. To get there, Anthropic counts all the work AI models could theoretically take on, not the revenue it expects to capture.
Total addressable market, or TAM, measures the annual revenue a company could theoretically reach if it owned the entire market. It's a standard pitch-deck metric, and a notoriously elastic one: the number moves with how broadly a company defines the market it claims to serve. Founders reach for the widest possible definition ahead of a fundraise or listing, since a bigger TAM makes a smaller current market share look like early-stage upside rather than a ceiling.
Anthropic's figure would put it ahead of SpaceX, which claimed a $28.5 trillion TAM in May and called it the largest actionable TAM in the history of mankind. Both numbers dwarf what the tech sector currently generates. The 191 tech firms in the S&P 1500 pulled in a combined $2.4 trillion in revenue last year, according to FactSet. Anthropic's claimed opportunity alone runs more than twelve times that entire sector's actual output.
The company's real numbers tell a smaller but still striking story. Anthropic doubled its revenue in the second quarter to $11.6 billion on an annualized basis, and it expects revenue of roughly $190 billion to $200 billion by 2028. That's a real trajectory, even if it sits nowhere near the trillion-dollar TAM figure Anthropic is showing investors.
The IPO math behind the pitch is aggressive on its own terms. Anthropic is chasing a valuation of about $2 trillion and wants to raise up to $100 billion, with a listing that could land in September or October.
- Claimed TAM: more than $30 trillion
- SpaceX's TAM claim for comparison: $28.5 trillion (May)
- Combined revenue of 191 S&P 1500 tech firms last year: $2.4 trillion
- Anthropic Q2 revenue (annualized): $11.6 billion, doubled year over year
- Projected 2028 revenue: $190 billion to $200 billion
- Target IPO valuation: about $2 trillion
- Target raise: up to $100 billion
TAM figures this large tend to work as a story investors get to imagine rather than a number anyone expects to see realized. SpaceX's $28.5 trillion claim didn't stop its actual revenue from landing in a very different range, and Anthropic's own $190 billion to $200 billion 2028 projection sits closer to what the company itself believes it can capture. The gap between the two numbers is the pitch.
Intokened covered the gap between market perception and Anthropic's own numbers earlier this month, when crypto traders priced tokenized shares of the company at $1.6 trillion and Anthropic said the tokens carried no real claim on equity at all. The IPO filing pushes a similar question further: how much of a $30 trillion opportunity can Anthropic realistically capture, and how much of it exists to make the S-1 look bigger.
Investors will get a clearer answer once the company files publicly and the September or October listing window arrives.
