US spot bitcoin funds lost $236.5 million on Monday, their largest single-day outflow since late July, while Ethereum, XRP and Solana products took money in. On Tuesday the flows ran the other way: bitcoin funds gained $101.15 million and the three altcoin products all went red. Two sessions ran in opposite directions, and both got written up as evidence of a rotation.

The two days

  • Monday: bitcoin minus $236.5 million, altcoin funds positive
  • Tuesday: bitcoin plus $101.15 million, Ethereum minus $48.08 million, XRP minus $7.2 million, Solana minus $6.13 million

Inside Tuesday's bitcoin number

The $101.15 million came from two funds and was partly cancelled by a third. BlackRock's IBIT took $115.45 million and Grayscale's Mini Trust $30.42 million, while Grayscale's older GBTC lost $56.21 million and Fidelity's FBTC finished flat. Money moved between issuers as much as into the asset. GBTC charges more than the products taking its assets, so part of what shows up as a daily flow is a fee migration that would happen at any price.

August set the bar

Bitcoin funds took $3.52 billion across August, their strongest month of 2026, on a 24.95% price gain. Against that, a $236 million day and a $101 million day are noise in both directions, and the first two sessions of September have cancelled each other out to a net outflow of about $135 million.

Daily numbers swing, so the 30-day figures show where the money settled: Ethereum funds took $1.83 billion, Solana $197.6 million and XRP $165.22 million. Solana pulled in more over the month than XRP despite a smaller base, with cumulative inflows of $1.34 billion against XRP's $1.68 billion. Bitcoin's cumulative total sits at $54.73 billion, and net assets across bitcoin funds reached $97.22 billion.

The dates the desks are watching

The market maker Wintermute points to the Federal Open Market Committee meeting on September 15 and 16 as the main catalyst for crypto markets this month. That date sits next to the Clarity Act vote, which gives September two scheduled events capable of moving flows. We looked at what the XRP side of that would take earlier today.

Given the levels currently reached, there is little doubt that some investors are accumulating XRP.

Prices moved the other way this week, with Solana, Ether and XRP leading a selloff after the Iran strikes hit risk assets. Accumulation and falling prices can run together, and this week they did.

One day of flows describes one day. The rotation story needs a week that points the same way twice, and neither side of this argument has had one yet.
