ChatGPT Ads hit $1bn run rate in 200 days and opened seven more markets

OpenAI has taken ChatGPT Ads into Southeast Asia and Taiwan, seven markets at once. The expansion itself is routine. The number underneath it is not: at the end of August the company said the advertising business had reached a $1bn annualized run rate in under 200 days from launch.

The shape of the rollout:

  • Seven new markets from 23 September: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan.
  • More than 60 countries in total, after earlier launches in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and India.
  • Ads appear only on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise stay ad-free.

Advertising has no influence over the answers generated by the platform.

OpenAI, From the ChatGPT Ads announcement

OpenAI, on the relationship between advertising and answers

That sentence is the one to keep, because it is the claim the entire product rests on and the only one users cannot verify from outside. Ads are labelled and kept separate from responses, conversations stay private from advertisers, and the answer is not influenced. All of that is company policy rather than an audited control, and it is worth writing down now so it can be checked later.

A rounding error and the fastest ramp

Reaching $1bn of run rate in fewer than 200 days, on the figures the company has disclosed, works out at roughly $5m of annualized revenue added for every day the product existed. For scale, that total is about 1.7% of the more than $60bn run rate Meta reports for its AI advertising suite, and 0.42% of Meta's advertising revenue annualized from the last quarter. The fastest ramp in the category is still a rounding error next to the incumbent, and both statements are true at once.

The distribution choice is the quieter tell. Advertisers reach it through OpenAI's own team, through self-service, and through dentsu, Havas Media, Omnicom Media, Publicis Groupe and WPP. That is effectively the entire global agency oligopoly. OpenAI did not build a new demand channel for this; it plugged into the one that already exists, which is why seven markets can open on a single date.

Two answers to the same question

The structure of who sees ads deserves naming plainly. Monetisation applies to the free tiers, and paying users are exempt. That is the standard arrangement across consumer software and it means the advertising business grows with the population that does not pay, in markets where the free tier is most of the user base.

For anyone who followed the search argument, this closes a loop. We measured that an AI answer cuts the click rate from 15% to 8%, with 26% of those sessions ending outright: attention that used to leave for a publisher now stays on the answer surface. Selling advertising against that surface is the direct monetisation of the traffic that stopped travelling. Meta chose a fee on transactions for its assistant instead. Two companies, two answers to the same question of how an LLM assistant pays for itself, and both now have a number attached.

Informational material, not investment advice. The revenue figure is an annualized run rate disclosed by OpenAI at the end of August, not audited annual revenue, and the separation of ads from answers is the company's own statement.
