CME crypto derivatives hit a record $469.5bn in the third quarter

CME Group put $469.5bn of crypto derivatives through its books in the third quarter, the most it has ever done. Bitcoin products carried $326.7bn of that and ether products $118.8bn, which leaves 5.1% for everything else the exchange lists. Average daily volume was 196,000 contracts and open interest sat near 197,000.

Put the record against the rest of CME and it shrinks. The exchange averaged 29.4 million contracts a day across every asset class in the quarter, so crypto was 0.667% of what CME traded. Its total quarterly revenue was $1.737bn, up 13% on the year, and crypto is not what moved that number.

A record measured against the market it trades

Put it against crypto instead and it shrinks again, though less. Spread $469.5bn across the 92 days of the quarter and CME was handling about $5.1bn a day. We measured Binance's dollar-margined perpetuals on 25 October: $52.6bn in 24 hours across 748 pairs, with bitcoin at $8.8bn and ether at $6.2bn. One offshore venue, on an ordinary day, moves ten times what the largest regulated derivatives exchange in the world moves in crypto.

The most quoted part of the quarter deserves the least weight. CME switched crypto trading on around the clock on 29 May, and weekend trading has produced $3.7bn in cumulative volume since. That is 0.79% of the quarter. The best weekend, 21 to 23 August, saw 69,600 contracts worth $554.7m. Opening the doors on Saturday has so far added less than one percent of the business.

“Traders moved 69,600 contracts worth $554.7 million in notional value.”

What actually moved the quarter

Two things did move. Bitcoin rose 43% and ether 70% off their second-quarter lows, and a rising market is most of what a record quarter in derivatives measures. CME also listed bitcoin cash and uniswap futures on 19 October, which puts a decentralised exchange token on a Chicago order book for the first time.

Average daily notional and micro-contract volume both fell during the quarter even as the total hit a record, which is the shape of fewer, larger institutional positions rather than broader participation. European regulators have already noticed the concentration: ESMA spent August asking for better data on how much EU exposure runs through CME's crypto book. A record that is 0.667% of your own exchange and 10% of one offshore competitor is a strong quarter and a small business at the same time.

Informational material, not investment advice. CME's figures are its own quarterly report; the daily averages, percentages and the Binance comparison are our arithmetic, measured on 25 October 2026.
