Bitcoin's best August since 2017 faces a Jackson Hole test this week

Bitcoin is entering the final week of August with its strongest monthly performance in nearly a decade, up 23% month-to-date and on track for its best August since 2017, when it rose 65%, according to Coinglass data cited by CoinDesk. The median return for the month sits at -7%.

The rally now runs into a dense stretch of catalysts: a wave of US growth and inflation data, capped by the Jackson Hole symposium, the Kansas City Fed's annual gathering of central bankers that has a history of moving markets when the Fed chair uses the podium to signal a shift in policy.

Bitcoin enters next week with considerable momentum, but also with a much higher bar to clear after its strongest weekly rally in years.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh delivers his first keynote address at the symposium on Friday, and traders will parse it for signals on future tightening. Warsh has already shown he can move the market twice in two weeks with a single set of remarks, so his tone here carries added weight. A speech that keeps further tightening at arm's length could preserve the weaker-dollar, lower-yield backdrop behind the rally, while a hawkish surprise could trigger profit-taking.

Wednesday's Core PCE Price Index reading matters for the same reason. The Fed treats it as its preferred inflation gauge, stripping out volatile food and energy prices to track the underlying trend, and economists expect it to hold at 3.3% year over year, still well above the central bank's 2% target. A hotter print would strengthen the case for a cautious Warsh, while a cooler one would support the dovish read markets currently favor.

Hong Yea, co-founder and CEO of crypto neobank Grvt, told CoinDesk the week will be shaped by the collision of Jackson Hole with geopolitical risk. Uncertainty over the U.S.-Iran conflict lingers, and Russia's invasion of Ukraine keeps threatening to escalate beyond a local conflict.

  • Aug. 26, 8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. Q2 GDP growth, second estimate, expected at 1.5%, down from 2.1%
  • Aug. 26-28: Jackson Hole Symposium, including Warsh's first keynote as Fed Chair

  • Aug. 24-25: TON unlocks 1.33% of its supply, worth about $54 million, and Humanity (H) unlocks 7.92% of its supply, worth about $20 million

The SEC and CFTC also close public comment Monday on two joint proposals covering derivatives product definitions and swap data reporting, a procedural step that could shape how crypto derivatives get regulated going forward. On the token side, several DAOs close governance votes this week, including Sushi DAO's proposal to restructure its tokenomics and migrate liquidity to Robinhood Chain, and Arbitrum DAO's plan to expand its audit program into a full security program.

None of it changes the immediate math. Bitcoin has already delivered an outsized month, and this week's data will decide whether traders treat that gain as a floor to build on or a peak to sell into.

Nothing here should be taken as financial advice — just information to consider.
