Ethereum proposes its first step toward quantum-safe staking

Ethereum researchers filed a draft proposal on August 24 for a post-quantum-ready validator deposit contract, a change that could become the network's most consequential security upgrade in years, CryptoBriefing reported. The goal is straightforward: protect the roughly 37 million ETH currently locked in staking, worth around $90 billion at today's price near $2,440, from turning into a sitting target if quantum computers mature faster than expected.

Researchers Kevaundray Wedderburn, Thomas Coratger, and Tom Wambsgans authored the draft. It introduces a deposit framework that supports variable-length public keys, signature schemes, and metadata through scheme identifiers, without committing to a specific post-quantum algorithm yet. Scheme 0 stays reserved for the existing BLS signature format, so nothing breaks during the transition.

The urgency traces back to March 2026, when Google Quantum AI published research suggesting the number of qubits needed to break elliptic-curve cryptography, the math underpinning most blockchain signatures, could run roughly 20 times lower than previously estimated. The Ethereum Foundation maintains that no viable quantum threat exists today, but cryptographic migrations move slowly and take years to execute across a live network.

Around 1 million validators currently secure Ethereum with BLS signatures, which rest on the same elliptic-curve math that quantum algorithms like Shor's could eventually break. The new contract preserves full BLS compatibility through the transition, so existing validators don't need to act immediately. It also builds in an irreversible BLS retirement switch, a one-way mechanism that would permanently phase out the vulnerable scheme once activated. Flipping that switch wouldn't make BLS validators vanish on its own; separate rules would still govern exits, credential changes, and migration into a post-quantum scheme.

On the technical side, the design replaces the current deposit contract's legacy Merkle-tree mechanism with execution-layer requests routed through EIP-7685, the general request framework Ethereum already uses for EIP-6110 validator deposits, EIP-7002 withdrawals, and EIP-7251 validator consolidations.

This work sits inside the Ethereum Foundation's "I*" milestone on its Strawmap roadmap, the multi-year plan for moving consensus-layer cryptography to quantum resistance. The end state, targeted for around 2029, envisions full migration to leanXMSS-based signatures, a hash-based scheme whose security doesn't rest on the math problems quantum computers are built to solve. A separate proposal, EIP-8141, is under consideration for the Hegota hard fork expected in late 2026 and covers account abstraction for opt-in quantum-safe signatures on the execution layer, the complementary half of the same migration.

The Ethereum Foundation backed this with a dedicated Post-Quantum Security team led by Coratger, which runs weekly interoperability devnets across more than ten client teams. Still, the proposal remains early. No target fork, testnet activation, or mainnet deadline has been set, and no ETH price movement has been tied to the draft.

The deposit contract only handles validator deposits. Account signatures, data commitments, and zero-knowledge systems still need their own post-quantum path before Ethereum can call the migration complete.
