Gemini predicted banks would adopt Zcash privacy by 2027

Asked about Zcash's fourth quarter, Google's Gemini produced a scenario in which major banks and financial regulators formally endorse shielded transactions as the standard for private institutional settlement, with a selective disclosure framework, by 1 January 2027. That is a story a model wrote on request.

“Major banks and regulators formally endorse shielded transactions as the standard for private institutional settlement.”

What the market actually shows

The asset underneath it is real enough. ZEC trades at $1,245.07, which makes it the tenth largest crypto asset at $21.23bn, on $1.28bn of daily volume. It is up 409.6% over 200 days and 351.6% over a year, down 17.8% over the past month, and still 61% below an all-time high set in October 2016.

The rule with a date on it

The scenario walks straight into a rule that already exists. Article 79 of EU Regulation 2024/1624 bars regulated institutions and crypto-asset service providers from holding accounts that allow the anonymisation of transactions. It applies from 10 July 2027. For Zcash in practice that means transparent addresses may survive at regulated venues while shielded support does not.

So the two dates sit six months apart and point in opposite directions. One is a published regulation with an application date and technical standards being written by the European Banking Authority. The other is text produced in response to a prompt. Only one of them will be enforced. An exchange operating in the EU will read the regulation, not the model output.

Why model forecasts spread so wide

The spread between model outputs is the clearest evidence of what they are. For the same asset and the same year, generated forecasts run from $900 to $2,440 depending on who typed what. A range that wide is not a Zcash prediction, it is a measurement of the question. A language model has no access to order flow, positioning or the balance sheets that move a price.

Named humans at least carry their own opinions. Cameron Winklevoss has said publicly that ZEC could eventually top $5,000 and called it the AI hedge in crypto, which is an argument with a person attached to it. An anonymous generated scenario is a different object, and treating the two as the same category is the mistake the headline invites.

Privacy itself is not the question here, and it keeps advancing on its own: Starknet shipped wallet privacy for DeFi activity this month, and privacy coins led a three-day run in August. What settles the regulated side is narrow: the EBA standards under the AMLR, which venues keep transparent-only ZEC, and whether shielded volumes move at all before July 2027.

Informational material, not investment advice. Prices were read on 22 October 2026, a model's scenario is generated text rather than analysis, and nothing here is a forecast.
