IMF warns on AI valuations: $1.4tn of commitments, 83% of bitcoin
The IMF published its Global Financial Stability Report in Bangkok on 13 October with a warning about a correction in AI valuations. The report carries the title «Resilience, Risk and Transformation», and its figures say more than the adjective does. The IMF AI valuations warning rests on four numbers, and each one has a source that updates on a schedule.
“Resilience, Risk and Transformation”
— IMF, Global Financial Stability Report, October 2026
What the report counts
The magnificent seven now make up more than 35% of the S&P 500 against 12% a decade ago, and their combined value has risen more than 50% in two years. Hyperscalers account for 10% of global investment-grade bond issuance, up from under 1% in 2024, so the companies buying the chips became a tenth of the high-grade bond market inside two years. A decade of index history moved less than these two years did.
The Fund flagged $300bn of transactions between hyperscalers and weaker AI firms, backed by $650bn of debt and $1.4tn of future commitments, and called the pattern circular financing that could amplify a selloff. A moderate correction in AI valuations together with tighter financial conditions would cut global output by 0.4% in 2026 on the Fund's own estimate.
The same numbers next to crypto
Crypto gives a scale for those numbers. The whole crypto market is worth $2.835tn today and bitcoin is $1.678tn of it. The $1.4tn of AI commitments equals 83% of bitcoin's entire market capitalisation. The $650bn of debt behind the circular deals equals 23% of all crypto. The $300bn of transactions between the hyperscalers and their customers comes to 10.6% of the market that gets called speculative in the same paragraph as the warning.
Chapter 3 of the same report covers tokenization: early benefits, emerging vulnerabilities, adoption constraints and what regulators should settle before the market grows. Yesterday we wrote about tokenized catastrophe bonds, where the entire outstanding market is $65.6bn, or 4.7% of the AI commitments the IMF just flagged.
What is checkable
Cyber risk sits in the same report, two days after Bill Gates told ABC News to expect negative surprises in cyber within a year. The three figures that settle this one: the concentration share updates at every index rebalancing, the issuance share appears in quarterly bond data, and the 0.4% output estimate carries a 2026 deadline.
Informational material, not investment advice. The IMF figures come from the Global Financial Stability Report of 13 October 2026, and the crypto comparisons use market data from the same day.
