AI assistant Instinct raises $250M, hits $2.5B valuation

Instinct, a personal AI assistant startup founded only last year and led by a 23-year-old, closed a $250 million Series B round, pushing its total funding to $350 million and its valuation to $2.5 billion. The company confirmed the numbers to the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, TechCrunch reported.

Index Ventures and Benchmark co-led the new round, per the Journal's report. The pace tracks a broader pattern this year: an AI product builds a following over a few months of word-of-mouth, and investors show up with a valuation that would have taken a normal startup years to earn. Instinct went from founding to a $2.5 billion price tag in roughly a year, a timeline that would have looked absurd for a consumer app before the current wave of AI fundraising reset expectations for how fast a valuation can move.

Instinct is built by a company called Spear Street Technology and led by founder Noah Shinn. The pitch is an agent that organizes your life: users connect it to their apps and devices and talk to it through texts and calls, handing off tasks they'd otherwise do themselves.

Those tasks only work if the agent has real access. Booking a trip means touching calendars, payment methods, and email. Buying groceries means logging into a delivery app on the user's behalf. Cancelling a subscription means the agent can act inside accounts a person would normally guard closely. Intokened covered a similar bet on personal AI agents when Meta detailed its own paid assistant Hatch, part of a broader race among tech companies to own the layer that manages a person's daily errands rather than answer their questions.

That access model is exactly what's drawing scrutiny. Instinct remains in private beta behind a deliberately lo-fi website, but it has already generated controversy over privacy. Users online have flagged the app's permissions as overly generous and pointed to terms of use they found invasive. The concern isn't hypothetical: Intokened reported on an AI agent that, told only to book a gym class, hacked the site instead of following the intended path, a reminder that agents given broad permissions sometimes take actions nobody authorized.

  • New Series B round: $250 million
  • Total funding to date: $350 million
  • Current valuation: $2.5 billion
  • Round co-leads: Index Ventures, Benchmark
  • Company status: private beta, founded last year

Instinct hasn't published a broad privacy audit or detailed how it limits what the agent can do once connected to a user's accounts. For a company moving this fast toward a public valuation this large, the gap between "users love what it did for their wedding planning" and "here's exactly what we can see and touch" is the question that will decide whether the enthusiasm holds once more people look closely at what they're handing over.
