Kraken VIP clients pay a taker fee 16 times lower

Kraken published an account of three nights it hosted for VIP clients in Jackson Hole: balloon rides, a cowboy cookout at a ranch, dinner at a mountain summit, a fireside chat with co-CEO David Ripley and a market session from CF Benchmarks. Invitations went out by trading volume, and the post does not say which volume.

“If you trade at a volume that qualifies you for Kraken VIP and haven't yet joined us, get in touch with our VIP team.”

— Kraken, From the VIP programme post, October 2026

What the fee schedule says

The fee schedule says it instead, so we read that. A client at Level 1, meaning $0 and up in 30-day volume, pays 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker. Level 12, which starts at $10m of 30-day volume, pays 0% maker and 0.10% taker. The highest published tier, Pro 5 at $500m and up, pays 0% and 0.05%.

From the bottom of the ladder to the top, the taker fee falls sixteen times. That is the whole programme in one number, and everything else in the blog post is decoration on top of it.

The same thing in dollars

Run it on real sums. Ten million dollars of taker volume in a month costs $80,000 at the entry rate and $10,000 at Level 12, so the tier is worth $70,000 a month to that client. Five hundred million costs $4m at the entry rate and $250,000 at Pro 5. Against a saving of that size, three nights in Wyoming is a rounding error, and both sides know it.

What each side is buying

What the client gets besides the rate is named plainly: a dedicated relationship manager, direct access to leadership, invitations to events like this one. What the exchange gets is that the volume keeps arriving where the schedule already favours it. Retention is the product; the balloon ride is the packaging.

None of this is unusual and none of it is hidden, which is the point worth making. The ladder is public, the thresholds for the top rungs are public, and the only undisclosed number is the one that puts a client on the invitation list. Kraken has been building out the account side in parallel, turning every EEA balance into margin this month.

One thing to keep in view while reading hospitality posts. The relationship manager is a service, not a guarantee, and the terms that decide whether money leaves an account are the same for a VIP as for anyone else, as we set out when we asked when an exchange can hold your funds. What settles this is whether Kraken ever publishes the qualifying volume, because a programme with an unpublished entry price is a discount with a handshake attached.

Informational material, not investment advice. The fee comparisons below assume all-taker volume for clarity, real flow mixes maker and taker, and Kraken does not publish the volume that qualifies a client for the programme.
