London Stock Exchange partners with Kraken's parent to tokenize UK stocks

The London Stock Exchange is partnering with Payward, Kraken's parent company, to bring shares of the 100 largest LSE-listed companies onto Payward's xStocks tokenization framework, Coindesk reports.

  • First batch of UK equities as xStocks expected "in the coming weeks"
  • Tokenized shares reach investors in 110+ countries, but not UK-based investors themselves
  • xStocks platform stats: $40B+ in total trading volume, roughly $20B settled onchain, 200,000+ holders
  • Subject to regulatory approval, LSE plans to list xStocks on LSE 24, its planned round-the-clock trading venue
  • London Stock Exchange Group shares fell about 2% in early London trading the day the deal was announced

Each xStock is backed one to one by the underlying security and can move across supported centralized exchanges, self-custody wallets, and onchain apps, trading around the clock even when the London market itself is closed. That's the same structure Payward already runs for thousands of US stocks in the EEA, where conventional shares and xStocks sit inside the same Kraken account.

Payward co-CEO Arjun Sethi framed the deal as evidence that crypto and traditional finance were never actually headed for a collision:

For years, the assumption was that crypto and traditional finance were on a collision course, and one of them would have to lose. That was never the real story.

LSE CEO Julia Hoggett struck a more cautious note, framing the partnership around preserving what already works rather than replacing it. Tokenization, she said,

must develop in a way that preserves the trust, rights and role of regulated markets.

The more structurally interesting piece sits past the initial rollout. Payward and the LSE said they'll explore natively issued LSE equity tokens, shares that exchange members could issue and service directly onchain, fully fungible with conventional stock and carrying the same rights. That's a different model from today's xStocks, which are tokens issued against securities held in a separate custody framework, not the securities themselves reissued on a blockchain. Intokened has tracked a similar shift toward institutional custody with DTCC's own move into tokenized Treasuries and stocks through BitGo.

The partnership builds on a wider push. Payward already runs xStocks across more than 90 international markets through a July deal with financial infrastructure provider GTN, and Kraken has let eligible customers outside the US post select xStocks as collateral for futures and margin trades since July. Neither company gave a firm date for either piece of the LSE deal: the first UK xStocks arrive sometime "in the coming weeks," and native equity tokens remain something the two sides say they'll "explore." The gap between the announcement and the UK's own investors getting access, zero, for now, is the detail that will stick.
