Samsung puts USDC on 82 million phones and keeps the reserves at Coinbase
Samsung Wallet will carry USDC on 82 million compatible Galaxy devices in the United States from the last week of October. The coin runs on Solana, Bastion supplies the payment infrastructure, and Coinbase Prime holds the reserves. Domestic US transfers are free at launch.
“Recipients need no cryptocurrency knowledge and no wallet of their own”

The remittance part is the product
A user sends USDC from the phone to a wallet or an exchange, or to a bank account in more than 60 countries, where the recipient collects local currency. Authentication is a fingerprint or a face. International fees vary by destination and amount.
The product is a remittance app with a stablecoin in the middle. The person receiving the money never learns that, and that is the design goal.
Where the coins actually sit
Coinbase Prime custodies the USDC reserves. Nothing in the product asks the user to hold a key, and nothing in it claims otherwise.
Binance.US shipped a wallet yesterday where the key splits three ways and the exchange keeps one share. Ledger shipped a loan yesterday that takes wrapped bitcoin as collateral and routes it through Coinbase or BitGo. Samsung uses neither the word nor the arrangement.
The distribution number next to the asset
Samsung Wallet USDC starts as a transfer product, and the company says it is exploring payments at online and physical stores through the same contactless path Samsung Pay already uses. That would put a stablecoin on the same tap as a card, which is the point Stripe and Citi are approaching from opposite sides.
82 million devices is about a quarter of the US population, with the caveat that devices are not people. USDC itself stands at $73.7bn, 23.5% of a $313.7bn stablecoin market, and $6.95bn of it sits on Solana, which is 9.4% of the supply.
Stripe took stablecoin cards to 100 countries on 5 October against an existing base of 400 million issued cards. Citi and Coinbase went at merchants on 29 September. Samsung is the third route to the same destination in ten days, and all three keep the stablecoin out of the user's hands. The thing being distributed at this scale is a dollar balance that settles fast, and the chain under it is an implementation detail the buyer never sees.
Informational material, not investment advice. The launch is announced for the last week of October and fee terms outside the United States have not been published.
