The 167 billion SHIB headline is worth about $929,000

U.Today ran a headline this afternoon about 167 billion SHIB moving in 24 hours, with the warning that the rally is ending. At the price the same article quotes, 168.18 billion SHIB comes to roughly $929,000.

The ten largest deposits it highlights add up to 3.53 billion tokens, which is about $19,500. The average deposit works out at $4,000.

The inflow figure by itself does not demonstrate that holders have begun to dump SHIB.

What 167 billion SHIB is worth

Shiba Inu has 589 trillion tokens in circulation, so billions of them are pocket change. Anything measured in SHIB units produces enormous-looking figures, and 168 billion of them is 0.029% of the supply.

Set it against trading volume and it shrinks further. SHIB turned over $69M in the last 24 hours, which is around 12.5 trillion tokens. The deposits in that headline amount to 1.3% of a single day's turnover.

The headline also says traded. The article says inflows, which means tokens arriving in exchange wallets. Those are different measurements, and only one of them appears in the body.

The article argues against its own headline

The article reports outflows of 208.98 billion SHIB against those inflows, so more tokens left exchanges than arrived. Exchange reserves fell 0.03% over the same day, and the netflow it prints is negative.

The three figures do not reconcile. Subtract 168.18 billion from 208.98 billion and you get 40.8 billion, not the 26.64 billion the article gives as netflow. One of those numbers is wrong, and the piece does not say which.

Shirinyan writes that the inflow figure alone does not show holders dumping SHIB, which is the sentence quoted at the top of this page. His headline says the rally is ending.

We recounted the moving averages

The article rests its case on one level: a 200-day moving average at $0.00000568 sitting above the market, with a breakout there deciding the next move. We recomputed the averages from 366 daily closes on CoinGecko, the same method we used on the XRP golden cross last week. Simple averages, no smoothing.

  • 50-day average: $0.00000488, with the price 13.1% above it.
  • 100-day average: $0.00000472, with the price 17.0% above it.
  • 200-day average: $0.00000539, with the price 2.5% above it.

On those numbers SHIB is trading above all three, including the 200-day it is supposed to be stuck beneath. The gap comes from the data source. A single exchange pair on TradingView prices differently from an aggregate of every venue, and the two are scoped differently rather than one being wrong. On the aggregate, the level this whole argument turns on is behind us.

SHIB sits 25.8% above its 45-day low and 6.5% below the 45-day high, up 9.7% on the week and 18.9% on the month. That is a mid-range recovery in a coin still 93.6% below its 2021 record, and it matches the rotation we measured across 152 altcoins this evening.

Shiba Inu exchange inflows are worth measuring in dollars rather than in tokens, and netflow tells you more than inflow does. A day when 200 billion SHIB arrives and nothing leaves would be worth reading about. Today the tokens went the other way.
