Solana block time drops to 200ms today and throughput stays flat
SIMD-0525 activates at epoch 1053 around 15:00 UTC today, taking Solana's target slot time from 250 milliseconds to 200. That completes a halving from the 400ms baseline in 49 days: 350ms on 21 August, 300ms on 28 August, 250ms on 18 September, 200ms now.
“Average slot times on recent epochs have run at 266 to 269 milliseconds”

The compute limit falls by the same proportion
At 250ms a block carries up to 37.5 million compute units. At 200ms the ceiling drops to 30 million, which is 20% less per block against 25% more blocks per second.
Multiply it out. Four blocks a second at 37.5 million is 150 million compute units per second. Five blocks a second at 30 million is 150 million. The upgrade buys confirmation latency and leaves capacity where it was.
The chain is running above its own target
The Solana block time has been cut four times in seven weeks, each step smaller than the last: 50 milliseconds off, then 50, then 50, then 50. The proportion grows each time, because taking 50ms off 250 is a larger cut than taking 50ms off 400.
Recent epochs have averaged 266 to 269 milliseconds against a 250ms target, so the chain is running 6% to 8% slower than the number it set on 18 September. The new target sits 33% below where the network has actually been operating. The two numbers have been apart for three weeks, and the gap is the thing to watch after 15:00 UTC.
What it costs validators
Voting frequency roughly doubles. The window for a group of four consecutive slots shrinks from 1.6 seconds to 800 milliseconds, network connection demands rise, and the blockhash validity window for processing transactions gets shorter. Operators running Agave, the client built by Anza, absorb all of that.
Zcash made the same kind of trade on 5 October, cutting target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 and dividing the per-block reward by three so issuance per unit of time stayed where it was. Both chains held one quantity constant while speeding up the clock.
What actually improves
Confirmation arrives sooner, which matters to payments and to anything quoting a price. Solana settled $5trn in stablecoin volume by our count on 24 September, and that is the workload where 50 milliseconds is worth having.
Capacity is a separate question, and this upgrade does not touch it.
Informational material, not investment advice. The 200ms figure is a target parameter, and measured slot times after activation may sit above it as they do now.
