SpaceX commits $100B to build the world's largest spaceport

SpaceX is committing $100 billion to build what it calls the world's largest spaceport, on coastal land in Louisiana, The Daily Hodl reported.

The new site, Starbase Louisiana, will become SpaceX's fourth and largest launch facility, built to support thousands of launches a year once fully operational. The plans call for five launch complexes, each with two pads and a propellant farm, alongside a propellant production facility, power generation infrastructure, vehicle processing areas, and housing for employees and their families.

Starbase Louisiana would join SpaceX's existing launch sites in Texas, Florida, and California, adding Gulf Coast access to a footprint that already spans both US coasts. A fourth site built specifically for high-volume operations signals SpaceX expects launch demand, driven by Starlink deployment, national security contracts, and eventually crewed missions, to keep climbing well past what its current sites can handle.

The project is projected to create 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade, at an average annual salary of $92,600, which runs 192% above the local Vermilion Parish average. SpaceX estimates more than 8,100 indirect jobs on top of that, putting the total above 11,100 new positions across the Acadiana region.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry framed the announcement as a turning point for the state. "Today is a pivotal moment for Louisiana," he said. "This announcement pushes our state beyond $250 billion in new investment and puts us at the center of the next great frontier. We have the people and talent to build what the world once thought impossible, creating jobs on land, across the Gulf and through space. Our job creation knows no bounds." He thanked Musk and SpaceX directly for choosing the state.

Construction is set to begin in 2027, with initial flight operations targeted as soon as 2029. The commitment lands alongside a broader run of bullish projections around SpaceX's valuation, including one prediction from entrepreneur Peter Diamandis that the company could eventually be worth $10 trillion.
