Tether Is Investing $20M in Brazil's Mercado Bitcoin

13

On July 7, 2026, Tether, issuer of the world's largest stablecoin, USDT, announced a $20 million investment in a strategic financing round for Brazil's Mercado Bitcoin, according to Tether's official press release.

What Mercado Bitcoin actually is: founded in 2013, the Brazilian platform has grown from a simple crypto exchange into a full financial provider — trading, tokenized investment products, lending, stablecoin-based payments, and cross-border transfers. It now serves 4.5 million users, holds more than 10 licenses across Brazil and Europe (including a payment institution license from Brazil's central bank), and has already issued more than 2 billion reais (about $387 million) in tokenized assets, The Block notes.

What the money is for: expanding payments infrastructure, scaling tokenized investment products for retail and institutional investors, growing lending capabilities, advancing on-chain capital markets, and pursuing international expansion, PYMNTS.com explains.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said: "Tether's mission is to build open, accessible, and efficient financial infrastructure for the world." Mercado Bitcoin CEO Roberto Dagnoni added: "The discussion is no longer whether finance will move on-chain. That transition is already underway," Decrypt reports.

What this means in practice: the deal looks especially notable given that just a week earlier, Tether's USDT effectively got locked out of Europe over MiCA non-compliance. While the European market closes off, the company is doubling down on Latin America — a region where the regulatory environment for asset tokenization is still considerably more permissive.
