Top 10 altcoins: a week of gains meets 48 hours of profit-taking

Every one of the top ten altcoins by market cap posted double-digit gains this week. Nine of them are red today. That's the shape of the last 48 hours: a sharp rally running into a wall of profit-taking, with the biggest weekly winners taking the biggest one-day hits.

XRP illustrates the pattern most clearly. It leads the group with a 37.9% seven-day gain and also leads it lower, down 6.79% in the past 24 hours to $1.37. Zcash tells the same story at a steeper angle: ZEC is the best performer of the ten over seven days, up 50.5%, after Grayscale's spot Zcash ETF went live and pushed the token to fresh highs. It's also down 6.56% today, one of the sharpest pullbacks in the group. Solana, Cardano, and Dogecoin all fell 5% or more in the same window. Hyperliquid is the outlier, still up 0.51% today after a 37.5% weekly run, the only one of the ten still green.

Behind the numbers sits a broader market move. The total crypto market capitalization fell about 1.6% on August 25 to roughly $2.75 trillion, with trading volume near $92.6 billion, according to a CoinGecko snapshot cited by CryptoTimes. Bitcoin itself dropped about 2% that day after a seven-day run of over 22%, and the pattern held across the board: coins that ran the hardest gave back the most.

  • Ethereum: $2,440.77, down 1.43% / up 26.9%
  • BNB: $694.19, down 0.55% / up 16.0%
  • XRP: $1.37, down 6.79% / up 37.9%
  • Solana: $95.50, down 2.66% / up 23.2%
  • TRON: $0.33, down 2.10% / up 0.7%
  • Hyperliquid: $81.21, up 0.51% / up 37.5%
  • Dogecoin: $0.084, down 5.13% / up 21.6%
  • Zcash: $764.76, down 6.56% / up 50.5%
  • Chainlink: $11.20, down 3.39% / up 16.2%
  • Cardano: $0.205, down 4.99% / up 19.0%

What drove the rally in the first place has little to do with any single altcoin story. Mid-August brought an expanded U.S. Treasury program of long-dated bond buybacks, which pulled Treasury yields lower and lifted risk assets broadly. Short covering added fuel, and so did White House engagement with the crypto industry and renewed momentum behind market-structure legislation. Sentiment moved with the price: the Crypto Fear and Greed Index sits at 68 to 74, solidly in Greed territory, up from around 40 a week earlier and the mid-20s a month before that.

Two events over the next few days will test that view directly. U.S. PCE inflation data lands Wednesday alongside the second estimate of Q2 GDP, and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh delivers his first Jackson Hole keynote on Friday, at a symposium built around payments and financial innovation. Warsh called the speech a "blank piece of paper" as of late July, which leaves markets guessing at a moment when guessing has gotten expensive.

XRP's pullback lines up with something Intokened found on the chain itself this week: active addresses on the XRP Ledger jumped 650% over two weeks, driven by existing holders rather than new speculative wallets, a signal that outlasted today's price dip even as leverage crept back into the trade. Zcash holders, meanwhile, have their own catalyst to watch beyond the ETF launch: a coinholder vote covering roughly 1,000,000 ZEC on the NU7 upgrade, which Intokened covered ahead of its scheduled date.

None of the ten coins broke their weekly trend. They paused it. Whether Wednesday's inflation print and Friday's Warsh speech restart the climb or confirm it was a catch-up trade, as Presto Research argues, depends on data nobody has yet.

Nothing here should be taken as financial advice — just information to consider.
