Trump renamed AI to super intelligence: we counted who complied
Trump renamed AI by executive order. Number 14434, signed on 30 September, tells federal agencies to write «super intelligence» and «SI» in place of «artificial intelligence» and «AI». Twelve days later we read the pages themselves, and the industry is drifting along at its own pace.
What the federal pages say now
The main NIST page now carries the title «Super intelligence | NIST». We counted 33 uses of the new term on it against one surviving «artificial intelligence». NASA's page reads «Super Intelligence - NASA» and runs 20 against three. Both carry the same sentence about updating communications as directed.
The addresses did not move. NIST's page still sits at /artificial-intelligence, and so does NASA's. Federal web teams rewrote the copy and left the URLs alone.
On ai.gov the split runs through one page. The visible text talks about a race for super intelligence. The description tag that search engines and social cards read still says artificial intelligence, in the meta description, the og:description and the twitter:description alike.
“NIST is working to update its communications to incorporate the term super intelligence as directed”

Where the rename stops
Outside the federal pages the counts go the other way. Nvidia's homepage uses «artificial intelligence» 26 times and «super intelligence» zero times, and Jensen Huang signed the White House accord on 29 September alongside Dario Amodei, Sundar Pichai, Mark Zuckerberg, Greg Brockman and Elon Musk. Satya Nadella, Jeff Bezos, Lisa Su and Alex Karp came to the lunch and did not sign. Gavin Newsom said California agencies keep using AI.
The word itself carries a second problem. In lab vocabulary AGI names a system that matches people across tasks, and superintelligence sits above that, so the order hands a term reserved for a hypothetical future machine to the chatbots you used this morning.
The rename holds on the pages the order reaches. Communications staff rewrote their sections in under two weeks, and a chief executive who signed the accord has not changed a word on his own front page, because no rule asks him to. We saw the same split in September, when OpenAI watermarked its output for the European Union and left the rest of the world untouched.
What is checkable
The counts above come from the live pages on 12 October and you can rerun them in a browser. If the companies follow, their product pages will say SI by the new year. A change of URLs would mean somebody treats this as permanent. Either way the data you send to these systems sits where it sat before the renaming.
Informational material, not investment advice. All counts were taken from the live pages on 12 October 2026 and can change the next time an editor opens them.
