X's Nikita Bier says crypto trade buttons are coming soon

Nikita Bier, the former head of product at X, says the platform will add trade buttons to crypto posts soon, letting users trade tokens directly from their timelines, BeInCrypto reported.

The post that triggered his reply put it bluntly: an X user credited the rally to Bier no longer shadow banning CT, shorthand for Crypto Twitter, the trading crowd that treats the platform as a real-time feed for token calls. A shadowban quietly limits how many people see an account without telling its owner.

Bier rejected the accusation and pointed to what he had already shipped instead.

Bier built Cashtags, the tool that pulls Solana and Ethereum price charts directly into posts, and said trade buttons follow soon. He argued X gave crypto traders nothing at all before he joined the company.

He also pointed to a feature that already lets traders paste a token's contract address, the string that identifies it on its blockchain, straight into a post. That matters because scam tokens routinely copy the names of real projects, so buyers check the address before sending funds. Trade buttons would remove the one step that still sends users elsewhere: today someone spots a token on X, then leaves for a wallet or exchange to buy it.

X first rolled out Cashtags in April to iPhone users in the US and Canada, and the pilot drew an estimated $1 billion in trading volume within 48 hours. The company added live stock charts to the same feature in May.

X has circled crypto trading for years without fully committing to it. Our own look at why X Money still has no crypto found the company repeatedly building adjacent infrastructure, charts, address lookups, wallet integrations, while stopping short of native token trading. Bier's trade-button plan would be the closest the platform has come to closing that gap.

  • Cashtags pilot volume: an estimated $1 billion within 48 hours of its April launch
  • Feature timeline: price charts (April), stock charts (May), address lookups already live, trade buttons next
  • Bitcoin at time of writing: near $80,643, up 4.25% on the day and 24.5% over the past month
  • Treasury buyback plan Bier credits: $950 billion, purchases at least doubled Aug. 20
  • Gold: logged its best month since 1999

Bier rejected the idea that X itself sparked the current crypto rally. He credited the US Treasury's bond buybacks and dollar debasement instead. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent at least doubled planned purchases of long-dated government debt on Aug. 20, a $950 billion buyback plan that critics have since attacked over how Washington intends to fund it.

Bier no longer runs product at X. He stepped back this month and stayed on as an adviser, which puts the trade-button rollout in his successor's hands. Neither Bier nor X has named a launch date, and Cashtags itself still covers only a handful of markets, so a buy button needs a wider rollout before it can ship broadly, especially outside the iPhone-only pilot markets in the US and Canada where it currently runs.

Nothing here should be taken as financial advice — just information to consider.
