Two identical glass measuring jugs side by side, the left one under half full of gold liquid and the right one filled to the brim

XRP's strong ledger day moved $1.4bn while exchanges moved $3bn

The XRP Ledger carried 929 million XRP in payments on 29 September, a one-day jump of 35.1% over a 30-day average near 615 million. The headline going round calls that a surge and a broken threshold. Convert it, then put it beside the other volume number for the same asset.

One asset, two kinds of volume

  • 929 million XRP in on-chain payments works out at $1.38bn at $1.49
  • Exchanges traded $2.99bn of XRP over the past 24 hours
  • Trading runs 2.16 times the ledger's strong day, and 2.83 times its current one
  • Payment volume has already fallen back to 708.6 million XRP, down 23.7%
  • 929 million is 1.47% of the 63.1 billion XRP in circulation and 13.3% of the ledger's 7 billion record

The threshold that broke was the 30-day average. The ledger's own record sits at 7 billion XRP, and the source itself notes that days above 1.5 billion have shown up only a handful of times this year. A 929 million day clears the monthly line and nothing above it.

“A 929 million day is therefore solid but not extraordinary.”

Look at what happened next. The surge lasted one day, and payment volume is back at 708.6 million, which is 13.4% above the updated average of 624.2 million rather than 35% above the old one.

What the price did meanwhile

XRP trades at $1.49, down 10.2% from the $1.66 high of late September and 59.2% below the $3.65 record of July 2025. The 200-day moving average sits near $1.37 and now overlaps the 50-day, and the source puts the levels to watch at $1.45 and $1.37 on the way down, $1.55 to $1.66 on the way up.

Traders read rising payment volume against a drifting price as utility arriving ahead of demand. The $2.99bn of exchange turnover is the check on that reading. Even on its strongest recent day the ledger carried 46% of what traders moved through venues, and on a normal day it carries about a third. Against a market cap of $94.1bn that means traders turned over 3.2% of all XRP in a day, while the ledger paid out 1.5% of it on its best recent one.

This is the same shape we counted in September, when a bullish XRP signal doing the rounds turned out to rest on a prediction market holding $89,586 in total. That number was real, dated and correct, and still smaller than the sentence built on it.

The source names the test itself at the end, and it is the right one. Payment volume has to keep holding above its monthly average for several days running before the word utility does any work. One day above the line is a data point; two weeks above it would be a trend, and nobody has two weeks yet.
