Midjourney was founded in 2021 by David Holz, who had previously sold Leap Motion. The company is not shaped like a startup: it raised no outside rounds, runs on subscriptions, and for years worked through Discord rather than a website. That bought it unusual independence, with the product moving where a small research group decides rather than where an investor does. The model’s house style is recognisable without a caption, and that style is what holds the revenue: Midjourney remains the most expensive way to get an image and the highest-grossing one. There is no free tier and no trial generations — the cheap entry closed in 2023 and never came back.
