Four bitcoin ETFs moved money on Wednesday. The other eight did nothing
Wednesday's bitcoin ETF outflow came to $120.2 million, a second red day in a row. Four of the twelve US spot funds accounted for all of it. The other eight recorded exactly zero, according to the flow table kept by Farside Investors.
Where the money moved:
- ARKB, from Ark and 21Shares: minus $78.0 million.
- GBTC, Grayscale's original trust: minus $27.2 million.
- IBIT, BlackRock: minus $19.5 million.
- MSBT, Morgan Stanley: plus $4.5 million.
ARKB carried 65% of the day by itself. The live blog at CoinDesk reports the same split from SoSoValue data and adds that the fund swung from a $137.7 million inflow on 3 September to a $78 million redemption three sessions later.
Eight funds did not trade at all
That zero is literal. Shares in these funds are created and redeemed in blocks by authorised participants, so a zero means nobody asked for a block in either direction for the whole session. The fund stood still while its holders traded the existing shares among themselves.
We counted how often that happens now. Across the first twenty sessions after the January 2024 launch, 21.6% of fund-days came in at zero. Across the last twenty sessions it is 53.8%, and across the last sixty, 56.4%. More than half the complex sits out a typical day.
IBIT, ARKB and GBTC took 71.6% of gross flow in those first twenty sessions and 74.2% in the last twenty. Their share held steady across two and a half years. The small funds are the ones that went quiet.
IBIT is bigger than the whole complex
Since launch the twelve funds have taken $55.52 billion between them. IBIT alone has taken $64.05 billion. Subtract one from the other and the remaining eleven are $8.53 billion in the red, with GBTC at minus $27.75 billion doing most of that.
Wednesday's ARKB figure weighs more than its size suggests. The fund has drawn $1.39 billion in net inflows across its entire life. The $78 million it gave back in one session is 5.6% of that.
Not quite every other fund
Ether funds took $34.7 million after losing $24.3 million on Tuesday, XRP funds $12 million and solana $12 million. Hyperliquid products lost $5 million. CoinDesk's headline says every other fund turned green, and its own body text records that loss.
Add the three green groups together and you get $58.7 million, under half of what left bitcoin. Traders call a day like this a rotation, and the money arriving covers less than half the money that left.
“Watch whether that fund prints a third direction change this week, since one desk has been setting the daily total for the complex.”

We ran the same check on Tuesday, when the funds were still short of breaking even for the year, and last week, when three sessions of redemptions ran against a rising price.
If you follow these numbers, count the funds before you read the total. On Wednesday the total described four of them.
