Bitcoin falls to $80,072, funding flips negative, longs take 92% of liquidations

Bitcoin trades at $80,072, the low of the past 24 hours and a fall of 2.78% across them. The whole crypto market is worth $2.707tn, down 5.95% in a day, so the smaller assets carried more of the move: ether lost 4.86%, XRP 4.65% and solana 3.38%.

Why it is falling

Two inflation prints did the damage. September CPI came in at 3.7% against expectations and the producer price index landed hot as well, which revived the case for a Federal Reserve hike in October. Asian equities fell with it, and the Kospi dropped hard, so the selling started outside crypto and did not stay there.

Vikram Subburaj, who runs the Indian exchange Giottus, tied the move to rates staying higher for longer. The market maker STS Digital put the next FOMC meeting at a coin flip, in the words below.

“With the next FOMC a coin flip, this uncertainty is damaging liquidity and dampening risk appetite across all asset classes”

What the derivatives show

The derivatives picture changed inside the session. This morning funding on Binance's BTCUSDT perpetual sat at 0.0044% per eight hours, about 4.8% a year, with longs paying shorts. It now reads minus 0.0005%, about minus 0.6% a year, so shorts pay longs and the perpetual trades under spot. The sign of that payment is the fastest read available on who is being squeezed, and it moves hours before any ETF number lands.

Open interest went the other way. It rose 5.6% over 24 hours, from $7.59bn to $8.02bn, while the price fell, which means traders opened contracts into the decline. The account ratio on the same venue still shows 1.77 accounts long for every one short.

Crypto liquidations reached $951.4m over 24 hours, and $876.3m of that came from long positions, 92.1% of the total. Rick Maeda of Laevitas read the scale of those liquidations as a sign that significant leverage has already left the market, and put the next question as whether spot demand returns or macro pressure keeps weighing.

What settles tonight

Three things settle tonight. Whether funding stays negative into the next payment. Whether open interest keeps building against a falling price, which is how a squeeze starts in either direction, with 1.77 long accounts per short on one side and negative funding on the other. And whether the ETF redemptions extend past the $597.6m of the previous five sessions. We asked this morning, measuring 72 hours, whether funding would flip, and it has.

Informational material, not investment advice. Prices, funding and open interest were read at 14:00 UTC on 15 October 2026, and an intraday move can reverse before the next funding payment.
