Claude: long documents, coding tool included, and what the tiers cost
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by Dario and Daniela Amodei with researchers who had left OpenAI, and put model safety at the centre from the start through an approach it calls constitutional training. The Claude assistant arrived in 2023 and settled where holding a long document without losing the thread matters more than answering fast. Our service card keeps the features and the checked prices together.
“The assistant picked for long reasoning rather than speed”

What comes with the subscription
Claude Code, the terminal tool for writing and running code, comes with every paid plan. Cursor charges $20 a month for its Pro tier and Replit $20 for Core, so a developer pairing a chat assistant with a coding tool pays twice while a Claude subscriber pays once.
What the tiers cost
Four tiers hold the pricing. Free gives limited usage without Claude Code. Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 billed annually, which is $204 a year against $240 and includes the coding tool. Max starts at $100 with a choice of 5x or 20x usage. Team runs $25 a seat, $20 annually, and adds administration and single sign-on.
The data a paying customer sends stays out of model training, which decides whether a law firm or a bank can use the thing at all. Anthropic also publishes the same dollar prices in every country, so there is no regional tier to hunt for.
The long-document habit is the practical difference. An LLM with a large context window is the mechanism: a 200-page filing, a codebase or a contract set goes in whole, and the answer refers to the part that matters rather than to a summary of a summary.
Who it fits
Who it fits: anyone working through long contracts, filings or codebases, any team that wants an assistant and a coding tool on one subscription, and any company whose compliance officer asks where the prompts go. Someone who wants the cheapest chat window has better options, and our assistant selection lists them, starting with ChatGPT's $9.10 tier.
We measured the economics behind the product this week. Anthropic earns $1.70 of revenue per dollar of compute against 63 cents a year ago, and has signed $518bn of infrastructure commitments. Those commitments sit behind the $20 line on the pricing page.
Informational material, not a purchase recommendation. Prices were checked on the company's own page on 12 October 2026. Our newsroom uses AI tools, including this one, which is why we state the comparison in numbers rather than impressions.
