Coinbase launches a payment stack letting businesses accept payments from AI agents on x402
Coinbase Business can now accept USDC payments from AI agents through the open x402 protocol — with no extra setup, powered by Coinbase Payments. It's part of a broader three-product launch, CoinDesk reports.
Three new products
- Coinbase Business Payments — accept payments from AI agents directly into a business account, managing all agent payments in one place.
- CDP x402 SDK — a developer toolkit that adds agent-payment acceptance to an API, MCP server, or web service in about three lines of code, with a built-in managed wallet and spend-control policy engine.
- Coinbase for Agents — real-time market data streams and plain-English trading commands for user-controlled automation.
Why this matters to Coinbase
Coinbase Business head Siddharth Coelho-Prabhu called agentic payments one of the company's most high-conviction bets.

The scale of the bet
Coinbase Business just marked one year since its June 2025 launch: about 5,000 customers and $1 billion in combined payments and trading volume — run by a team of roughly 12 people. The company says that as of June, 53% of traffic to Base blockchain documentation was coming from AI agents — a clear signal of where demand is headed. Coinbase is clearly assembling a full financial stack for the agentic economy: payment rails, accounts, and developer tools, all in one place. The same x402 protocol was recently picked by MoonPay for its Paybox product — we covered that separately.
