Coinbase CEO: AI Doesn't Diminish Crypto — It Makes It More Important
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong pushed back on the idea that the rise of AI makes crypto less relevant — in his view, it's the opposite. On July 26, he posted on X:
“AI being a megatrend takes nothing away from crypto. If anything, it makes crypto more important.”
— Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase

Armstrong's logic is simple: autonomous AI agents transacting without a human in the loop have nowhere to get a traditional bank account, so they need "programmable money" they can work with directly through code. In his own words, these agents will eventually transact far more per day than all of humanity combined.
- Agentic.market — a marketplace Coinbase launched in April 2026 where AI agents can discover and pay for services.
- x402 — Coinbase's own protocol for machine-to-machine USDC payments, the infrastructure all of this runs on.
This isn't a new term or concept coined by Armstrong himself — the market has already been using the word "AiFi" for a similar idea of bridging AI and DeFi, but he hasn't used that word, per Benzinga. It's more of a strategic bet: just days ago Coinbase launched a payment stack on x402 for accepting payments from AI agents, and Armstrong's statement reads as an attempt to stake out Coinbase's infrastructure as the rails for the coming "agentic economy," not just a philosophical aside.
Nothing here should be taken as financial advice — just information to consider.
