A crypto meme game now costs about $1,000 to build

Building a small speculative crypto game used to take months and real money. With AI tools it now takes days and about $1,000. Kieran Warwick, co-founder of Illuvium, expects as many as 100,000 of them to launch within a year, most designed to live for days rather than seasons.

“Plenty will be ponzis. Plenty will get exploited. Plenty will insta die.”

— Kieran Warwick, Co-founder, Illuvium

He is not selling the idea. His own words are that plenty will be ponzis, plenty will be exploited and plenty will die instantly, which is an unusually honest forecast from someone inside the industry it describes.

How small the category is

The pond these would land in is small. Crypto gaming applications hold $232.2m of total value locked across 2,356 apps, which averages $98,557 an app. The category is not short of games. It is short of money arriving at them.

Run the forecast as arithmetic. One hundred thousand games at $1,000 each is $100m of build cost, which is less than half the money currently locked across the whole category. Producing the entire wave would cost less than what is already sitting in the apps it would compete with, and that ratio is the thing worth staring at.

What the memecoin template is worth now

The template being copied is shrinking too. The article cites the memecoin sector at $150.6bn in December 2024 and $47.2bn in November 2025. We read it at $29.60bn today, so it has fallen another 37.3% since that second figure and 80.3% from the peak. Meme games are arriving to inherit an audience that has lost four fifths of its value.

Who has already tried

The other voices in the piece are builders who already tried. Corey Wilton of Mirai Labs says his studio shipped six or seven games into demand that was not there. Yield Fields raised $8.3m selling NFT land plots on 14 October. Illuvium's own Overworld has been in development for more than six years with full release targeted for the first quarter of 2027. Six years against three days is the whole argument in one comparison.

We measured the same mechanic from the token side this week, when a meme coin named after a GTA 6 brand reached a $14.5m valuation on half a million dollars of liquidity, and the rules that follow such waves are already being written, as California showed. What settles this one is dull and checkable: whether total value locked in crypto gaming moves at all over the next quarter.

Informational material, not investment advice. Category values were read on 22 October 2026, and a game built in three days can stop working in one.
