Morgan Stanley's $1bn bitcoin milestone needs a price, not another purchase
Arkham puts MSBT at 10,519 BTC, worth about $901m at $85,662. The fund launched on NYSE Arca on 8 April, the first spot bitcoin ETF issued by a major US bank, and it has not sold.
“MSBT could reach $5 billion in assets in its first year”
— Эрик Балчунас, Старший ETF-аналитик Bloomberg, апрель 2026
The milestone is arithmetic on the price
At 10,519 coins, $1bn arrives when bitcoin trades at $95,066. That is 11.0% above today. The alternative route is buying 1,155 more coins and leaving the price alone.
We published first resistance at $94,173 on 2 October. The price the headline needs sits 0.94% above the level we said the market has to clear first. Reaching it means clearing that level first.
Six months into a twelve-month forecast
Balchunas put $5bn on the first year. Day 180 of 365 closed at $901m, which is 18.0% of the target.
Getting the rest done means $22.2m a day for the remaining 185 days. The fund has averaged $5.0m a day since launch. It would have to run 4.4 times faster from here.
What it did do
58.4 BTC a day on average across 180 days. Miners produce 450 BTC a day at the current subsidy, so one fund that did not exist in March now absorbs 13.0% of new supply. Day one took $34m; the stack is 26.5 times that now, and the daily flow numbers we tracked in September move by more than that in a morning.
Morgan Stanley charges 0.14%, against 0.25% at BlackRock's IBIT, a 44% discount. Balchunas read that as removing any conflict for roughly 16,000 Morgan Stanley advisers recommending the house product. At current assets the fee earns $1.26m a year, on a wealth platform holding $6.2trn. The fund is 0.0145% of the money Morgan Stanley already manages.
The Morgan Stanley bitcoin ETF earns its keep by holding clients on the platform rather than by the fee. Someone who wants bitcoin no longer leaves to get it, and six months at 58 BTC a day is what that looks like from the outside.
James Seyffart, also at Bloomberg, put the limit on it in April: IBIT is the most liquid bitcoin ETF for trading and options, and MSBT is unlikely to compete with that any time soon. Six months of steady buying has not changed that part.
The $1bn headline may land this month, and bitcoin's price will decide it.
Informational material, not investment advice. Holdings come from Arkham's tracking of the fund's wallets, and the dollar figure moves with the bitcoin price.
