Nvidia's DLSS 5 launches September 3, backed by just one game

Nvidia launches DLSS 5 on September 3, The Verge reports, five months after a divisive reveal that drew comparisons to a real-time generative AI filter for video games.

DLSS, short for Deep Learning Super Sampling, is Nvidia's AI system for boosting game performance and visual quality without demanding more raw rendering power. Earlier versions upscaled resolution and generated in-between frames. DLSS 5 goes further: by Nvidia's own description, it alters a scene's visual content directly, adjusting lighting, textures, and even character faces based on a game's source material.

  • DLSS 5 is officially available on RTX 50-series desktop and laptop GPUs, plus GeForce Now cloud gaming
  • The only game shipping with the tech at launch is NBA 2K27, which releases the same day at 9PM PT on PC
  • Nvidia called DLSS 5 its most significant graphics breakthrough since real-time ray tracing debuted in 2018, and says it gives developers control over how the AI changes appear
  • Online players and modders mocked March's demo images for altering character faces, including a much-memed "yassification" of a Resident Evil Requiem character
  • At launch, Resident Evil Requiem still doesn't support DLSS 5. Neither do EA Sports FC, Starfield, or Hogwarts Legacy, all games shown in the original reveal

Nvidia didn't answer questions about when DLSS 5 might reach any game beyond NBA 2K27, or reconfirm that the previously shown titles still plan to add it. By staying silent, Nvidia is betting the entire launch on one basketball game's ability to prove out a technology it has billed as a bigger leap than ray tracing itself.

This launch joins a stretch of Nvidia headlines that have mostly been about money, not graphics. There's a 70% growth forecast, and a running bet that AI agents built on its chips can do more than render frames, including real protein-folding experiments run through Anthropic's Claude. DLSS 5 is Nvidia's attempt to show that same AI push translating into something players can see on screen.

For now, Nvidia is resting that proof on a single basketball game and a GPU tier most players don't own. Whether the backlash to the March demos fades once people can run DLSS 5 themselves is one open question. Whether NBA 2K27 becomes the cautionary tale other studios point to before adding the tech is another. Modders have already leaked and applied DLSS 5 to games Nvidia never officially confirmed, so players outside the RTX 50-series tier may end up testing the tech before Nvidia gives them an official reason to. Nvidia hasn't shown results to answer either open question.
