SpaceX and Tesla merger would unite 30,221 bitcoin
Elon Musk confirmed on SpaceX's third-quarter call that SpaceX and Tesla are exploring a merger. Independent director committees have been formed at both companies to assess it, and no terms have been agreed. A combined company would hold 30,221 bitcoin: 18,712 at SpaceX and 11,509 at Tesla.
Musk cannot sit in those meetings. He owns about 36% of SpaceX outright, 48.4% counting restricted shares and options, and 19.8% of Tesla including restricted compensation shares, which puts him on both sides of any price that gets agreed.
“It's an odd kabuki dance where two groups of people are talking, and I can't be in the conversation.”

Where the stack would rank
We checked the stack against the public treasury table. At $83,322 a coin, 30,221 bitcoin is worth $2.52bn. That would place the merged company sixth among listed corporate holders, above Bitcoin Standard Treasury's 30,021 coins and below Strive's 33,996. Apart they sit far lower down the same list.
What it is worth next to the business
Now put the same number next to the business it would join. SpaceX booked $14.58bn of revenue in the quarter and spent $19.59bn of capital, $16.44bn of it on AI. The combined bitcoin is worth about two weeks of that AI spending. It is a headline in crypto and a rounding item in a merger.
The market was reacting to the results rather than the coins. SpaceX beat on both lines, $14.58bn against a $12.7bn consensus and earnings of $0.35 a share against $0.15 expected. The stock closed Tuesday at $147.79 and traded near $161 in Wednesday's premarket, roughly 9% higher, which still leaves it 29% below its 52-week high of $225.64. Tesla reports after Wednesday's close.
Why the index rule misses it
One thing a merged entity would not have to worry about is the index screen that caught the treasury companies this month. MSCI put Strategy and Metaplanet on a deletion list for holding more asset than operating business. A company with $2.52bn of bitcoin against $14.58bn of quarterly revenue fails nothing. The coins are small enough to be invisible to the rule.
Three things settle this. Whether the committees agree a ratio at all, how Musk's two stakes are reconciled without him in the room, and whether the bitcoin is mentioned in the deal documents or simply carried across. Tesla's shares already trade in five tokenised versions, so the market will price the combination before the paperwork does.
Informational material, not investment advice. Prices were read on 21 October 2026, no deal terms exist yet, and either committee can end the process without a transaction.
