Strategy bought 250 bitcoin and spent nine times that on buybacks
Michael Saylor's company added 250 BTC for $21.5m last week. Strategy bought 250 bitcoin at an average of $86,000 a coin. Bitcoin trades at $82,911 as we write, so the purchase sits 3.6% under water six days later, a paper loss of $772,250. Strategy funded it with $21m of common stock sales and $500,000 of cash it already held.

Where the week's money went
In the same week Strategy spent $192.4m repurchasing its own shares, against $176.3m the week before. Two weeks of buybacks come to $368.7m, seventeen times what went into bitcoin. Strategy put most of the money into its share price.
The purchase moves the holding by 0.0295%. The company owns 848,250 BTC, worth $70.3bn at today's price, so 250 coins change the total by three ten-thousandths. That pile is 4.22% of every bitcoin in circulation and 4.04% of the 21 million that will ever exist, which is the number that made the company interesting in the first place. Saylor marked the week on Sunday with his usual line about orange, and MSTR opened Monday up less than 1%, with the STRC preferred at $99.68.
What the quarter shows
The third quarter numbers run against the slogan. Strategy acquired 7,218 BTC and sold 5,553, so it sold 77 coins for every hundred it bought, and the stack grew 0.2% across three months. Strategy sold in a quarter when its pitch said it would hold, and the weekly disclosure gives no reason for the sales.
The balance sheet explains the caution. The company keeps a $4.88bn reserve for preferred dividends and debt payments, plus $640.5m in cash, and that reserve covers 227 weeks of buying at last week's pace. It exists because the preferred stack asks for cash on dates nobody can move, which is the machinery we described when Strategy proposed 1,460 record dates a year.
What to watch
Watch the ratio rather than the headline. Buybacks at nine times the bitcoin line turn a treasury story into a share-price story, and the sold column in the next quarterly filing answers the rest. For scale, Morgan Stanley's bitcoin fund crossed $1bn last week on a 1.4% move in price, which is the kind of arithmetic that now outruns a 250-coin purchase.
Informational material, not investment advice. Prices and the dollar value of the holding were read on 12 October 2026, and the week's purchase was reported by the company itself.
