Strategy bought 950 bitcoin at exactly $80,000. That is 0.112% more
Strategy bought 950 bitcoin for $76m, and Michael Saylor announced it as a little more orange. Divide one figure by the other and the company paid exactly $80,000 a coin. Bitcoin trades at $85,244 today after a 6.1% day, so the position is 6.6% in profit within hours of being disclosed.
This Strategy bitcoin purchase is small and the holding is not. Strategy now owns 846,000 BTC, which is 4.029% of the 21 million that will ever be mined, and at today's price that stack is worth $72.12bn. The trade that made the headline moved it by roughly a ninth of one percent.
Three ways to size the same trade:
- The purchase: 950 BTC for $76m, which is exactly $80,000 a coin.
- As a share of Strategy's own stack: 0.112%.
- As a share of every bitcoin that will ever exist: 0.0045%.
Against new supply the picture changes again. At 3.125 bitcoin per block the network issues 450 a day, so 950 coins is 2.11 days of everything mined worldwide. The full 846,000 is 1,880 days of issuance, or 5.15 years in which one balance sheet absorbs every new coin produced anywhere. That is the number that matters, and it was true yesterday too.
The number we are not repeating
One figure we will not repeat. The most widely cited average purchase price for the position, $66,384.56, is published alongside a total cost of $33.139bn, and those two do not multiply out: 845,050 coins at that average comes to $56.1bn, not $33.1bn. Until the two reconcile, the only cost number worth quoting here is the one from this week's trade, and that one is exact.
“A little more orange.”

Four percent, bought on purpose
Concentration is the story a treasury like this tells, and it reads differently depending on who else is holding. Governments between them hold a large position too, but we found that 98% of state-held bitcoin was seized or donated rather than bought. Strategy's 4% was bought, deliberately, over six years, with money raised for the purpose.
Timing is the other half. The buy lands on a day when bitcoin rose 6.1% and 43.4% above its July low, into a market where the tests of whether the winter ended still disagree. Paying exactly $80,000 on such a day is a decision about a level rather than a reaction to a move. Whether it was a good one will be answered by the same arithmetic in a year.
Informational material, not investment advice. The purchase and holdings figures come from Strategy via The Block; the bitcoin price and every ratio here are ours, taken on 21 September 2026.
