Tesla Roadster deposit: $250,000 buys a place in line, not a car

Tesla is taking $250,000 up front for the Thrust version of the new Roadster, the one with the rear thrusters that flipped itself in the air at the reveal. The reservation agreement says the company cannot promise when the car arrives, or that it arrives. Nobody has been told the final price either.

“Roadster is still under development and so we cannot guarantee when your vehicle will actually be delivered or if it will be delivered.”

— Tesla, Roadster reservation agreement

What the deposit buys

The money buys an approximate place in the queue to place an order. Tesla will refund it in full if the holder cancels before finishing the configuration, so the deposit is a free option in one direction and an open-ended wait in the other. Three tiers exist: $50,000 for the Performance car, $250,000 for Thrust, and an invitation-only Rocket with ten thrusters and no published fee.

The same promise in 2017

This has happened before with the same car. Tesla unveiled the next-generation Roadster in November 2017 at the same $50,000 and $250,000 tiers and promised deliveries in 2020. Production now starts in 2028, eight years past that promise and eleven years after the first cheques cleared. The company has not said what the 2017 holders get.

The car being promised shrank along the way. The 2017 range figure was 620 miles; the current one is more than 300. Top speed is quoted above 230 mph, acceleration to 60 mph under a second on the Thrust, and Elon Musk said on stage that this is not necessarily a safety-optimized car. The FAA has told reporters the Roadster does not meet its definition of an aircraft, so no airworthiness certificate is needed for the thrusters.

What the money did not do

The deposit is refundable, so the headline risk is not the money itself. The cost is what the money did not do. Tesla stock closed at $21.00 on 17 November 2017, the session after the reveal, adjusted for the splits since. It closed Friday at $354.72. A $250,000 deposit put into the shares of the company selling the car would be worth $4.22m today, 16.9 times the stake. Holding the reservation instead gave up $3.97m of that and earned no interest for nine years.

Crypto desks reached the same car from the other side last week, when five issuers of tokenized Tesla shares priced the stock within 0.30% of each other, each on its own blockchain, while the Roadster was flipping on stage. The underlying business is doing fine: the company moved more cars than it built in the third quarter, which we counted at 22,141.

Three things would change the arithmetic. A published final price. A production date that survives a quarter. And a statement on whether the 2017 deposits carry forward at the price promised then. Until those arrive, a quarter of a million dollars buys a line in a database.

Informational material, not investment advice. Share prices were read at Friday's close on 16 October 2026, and Tesla has published neither a final price nor a delivery schedule.
