Apple Watch AI can now rewind 15 seconds of speech in developer beta
Apple has opened the Apple Watch AI features it calls Audio Intelligence to developers in the iOS 27.3 beta, TechCrunch reported on 2 November. Apple first showed them at its September hardware event. A public beta comes next, then a general release, and Apple has not named a date.
The features run on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. They need the S11 chip, the watch microphone and Apple Intelligence models on a paired iPhone. You switch on each one yourself.
Four features
- Sound recognition flags sirens, alarms and doorbells, with deaf and hard-of-hearing users in mind.
- Song recognition uses Shazam to name background music and its artist.
- Live Rewind shows the last 15 seconds of speech as text on the watch face.
- Siri Recaps turns a conversation into a one-line summary with bullet points.
How Live Rewind works
You double-press the Digital Crown, and the watch plays a chime and an animation so people nearby know it is capturing speech. You can delete the snippet or save it to the standalone Siri app in iOS 27. An Ask Siri button under the text lets you ask what an unfamiliar term or a menu item means. The watch deletes an unsaved snippet after 30 seconds.
By our estimate, at a typical pace of about 150 words a minute, 15 seconds holds 35 to 40 words, one or two sentences.
Siri Recaps
Recaps pull out dates, deadlines, prices and payment plans. Apple suggests them for work meetings, parent-teacher conferences and personal training. It says recaps do not identify speakers, keep raw audio or produce word-for-word transcripts, and they leave out government IDs, financial and login data.
You can run recaps by hand or on a schedule, for example only at work, and switch them off in Control Center. The watch asks you to review them in the evening and on the first unlock in the morning. Unreviewed recaps delete themselves after seven days.
Where the audio goes
A Secure Enclave on the watch holds audio in a separate buffer. Small models on the S11 check whether the conversation involves you, then pass audio to the iPhone. The phone runs inference that turns speech into condensed text and sends it, encrypted, to Private Cloud Compute. Apple says that service writes the recap and then deletes its copy.
Meta has faced backlash over its AI glasses and is preparing an AI keychain of its own. Apple pitches its version as one that respects bystanders. It fits the AI strategy John Ternus, CEO since 1 September, described to Wired: no AI for AI's sake. Apple says battery life on the watch and the phone should stay about the same.
Apple Watch AI features are in developer beta; the privacy and battery claims come from Apple and have not been tested independently.
