Bitcoin held a 2% band for two days before a Senate vote and the Fed
Bitcoin trades at $77,686, which is 0.42% above where it opened two days ago, and the whole of those two days fits inside a band of 2%. Bitcoin this week faces a Senate vote and a Federal Reserve decision 24 hours apart, and the quiet ahead of them is the story.
“Clarity isn't dead. Lots of negotiating over the weekend. My instinct is the bill makes it to the floor.”

The last 48 hours
The 48-hour tape:
- The high was $78,000 at 08:00 UTC today and the low $76,389 at 00:00 UTC, a range of 1.97%.
- That range sits in the 18th percentile of the last 952 rolling two-day windows, against a median of 3.37%.
- Binance spot turned over 17,248 BTC, about $1.34 billion, across the 48 hours.
Positioning went the other way while price stood still. Open interest in the Binance perpetual rose 2.8% over the two days to 106,401 BTC, worth $8.27 billion, and the funding rate climbed through the last six payments from 0.0052% to 0.0080%. Longs are paying more to hold a position that has not moved, which is what building into an event looks like.
The low of the window came at midnight UTC, and we timed the bounce this morning: it started about two hours after the revised market structure bill circulated, with the two heaviest hours of the 48 at 02:00 and 03:00.
Two events, 24 hours apart
Tuesday brings the Senate cloture vote at 2:15 pm Eastern, which needs 60 senators to open floor debate on the 635-page final text. Wednesday brings the Fed decision at 2:00 pm Eastern with a fresh dot plot and a press conference from Chair Kevin Warsh. Thursday brings weekly jobless claims, with 315,000 expected against 310,000, and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index at a forecast 19.2. August retail sales land in the same stretch with consensus at minus 0.8%.
Traders price a 25 basis point hike at 79.5% and no change at 20.5%, with $30.8 million on the hike contract and $39.6 million on the hold. Priced that heavily, the hike is the outcome that moves nothing. The surprise sits on the other side, and it is worth about a fifth of the probability.
The vote is the looser of the two. It is procedural, it needs Democratic votes the Republicans have spent a year negotiating for, and the market that prices enactment this year still sits above 30% rather than near certainty. A failure on Tuesday sends the text back into the same negotiation, and the bill has survived that outcome before.
How fast it usually happens
When August inflation landed exactly on forecast on Friday, bitcoin moved 5% in two hours and then stopped. Our minute-by-minute count of that session is the closest guide to what Wednesday afternoon looks like: the move arrives inside the hour, and the rest of the day trades the aftermath.
