The CPI landed exactly on forecast, and bitcoin rose 5% from the low
US consumer prices for August landed exactly where forecasters had put them, and bitcoin rose five per cent from its low within two hours. Matching the forecast was the bullish outcome, which is the opposite of how most days work.
The two hours, in order:
- 12:30 UTC, the release: CPI at 0.4% on the month and 3.4% on the year, core at 0.3% and 2.4%.
- The same hour: bitcoin first fell to $76,047, below the level traders had been watching, then closed at $78,033.
- 13:00 UTC: high of $79,333.
- 14:00 UTC: high of $79,890, five per cent above the low set ninety minutes earlier.
Note what the price did first. The release hour took bitcoin down to $76,047, which is $223 below the $76,270 line Bitget's Lewis Huang had named as the level that mattered. That line held for the length of one candle before the whole move reversed through it.
The volume behind the bitcoin rally says the same thing. The 12:00 hour traded 3,531 bitcoin on Binance, against roughly 420 in each of the hours before it, more than eight times the pace, and the hour after it traded 2,452.
Matching the forecast was the bullish case
The number itself gave nobody much to cheer about.
“The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.4 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis in August after rising 0.1 percent in July.”

Headline inflation at 3.4% is not low, and 0.4% on the month is four times July's pace. What the release did not contain was an upside surprise, and that absence was the whole event.
We set this out two hours before the print. Interest rate futures had a Federal Reserve increase at about 70%, so a hot number would mostly confirm what traders had already paid for, while an in-line number would force them to unwind. The unwinding is what the last two hours were.
Yesterday ran the same experiment in reverse. The producer index overshot on the year at 5.4% against 5.1% expected, and bitcoin gave up $1,283 inside one hour before making a deeper low overnight. Same minute of the day, opposite surprise, opposite result.
Altcoins ran further
The rest of the board moved further than bitcoin did. Ether is up 7.3% over twenty-four hours against bitcoin's 2.7%, solana 4.5% and XRP 2.7%. Altcoins leading a move is what risk appetite looks like when it returns, and it is the first session this week where breadth ran ahead of the largest asset rather than behind it.
The Federal Reserve still meets on 15 and 16 September, and one in-line CPI does not settle what it decides. What today removed was the case for a surprise, and the market had been paying for a surprise all week.
