The whole move was one hour, and the low came eleven hours later
Bitcoin covered $1,283 between the high and the low of a single hour yesterday, and spent the other twenty-three hours of the day going nowhere in particular. That hour was 12:00 UTC, when the US producer price index landed at 0.4% for August. The whole day's move fits inside it.
The tape, hour by hour, from Binance:
- 12:00 UTC, the release hour: high $77,959, low $76,676, close $76,896. Volume 2,886 BTC.
- 14:00 UTC: back up to $77,412, having recovered more than half of the drop.
- 23:00 UTC, with no news attached: a new low of $76,464, the deepest point of the move.
- 06:00 UTC today: $77,279, which is 0.72% below the pre-release level.
The release hour traded 2,886 bitcoin against an average of 547 across the six hours before it, five and a quarter times the recent pace. Nothing else in the session came close to that, and the two other bitcoin stories of the day moved the price by less than a tenth of a percent between them.
We wrote up the ETF outflow of $120.2 million at 10:10 UTC, and the hours around it drifted 0.3% lower with volumes in the normal range. A fund flow that arrives on a schedule is a known quantity by the time it is published. A macro print at a fixed minute is not.
The second leg down is the part worth keeping. Eleven hours after the release, in overnight trade with no announcement attached, bitcoin printed $76,464, which is $212 below the low it made in the release minute itself. Thin books after the US close finished the move that the data started.
A number that matched still moved it
The print that did it said nothing dramatic.
“The Producer Price Index for final demand moved up 0.4 percent in August, seasonally adjusted.”

Bureau of Labor Statistics, PPI release, 10 September 2026
That is the point. The number matched the forecast rather than missing it, and the annual rate of 5.4% is what the market reacted to. A release that lands exactly where it was expected can still move a price, because expectation and comfort are different things.
Sentiment fell further than price. The crypto fear and greed index reads 56 this morning against 69 yesterday and 66 the day before, a 13-point drop overnight while the bitcoin price lost 1.6% over the same twenty-four hours. The index is still in greed territory, so this is a mood adjustment rather than a turn.
The next fixed minute
The rest of the market went with it and no further. Ether is down 0.55% on the day, XRP 2.61% and solana 2.15%, all measured over the same window. Bitcoin fell less than the altcoins and gave up more dollars, which is what usually happens on a macro day rather than a crypto-specific one.
The next fixed minute is today. Consumer prices for August are scheduled for 08:30 in New York, 12:30 UTC, the same slot that produced yesterday's hour. Yesterday's producer figure is the frame it will be read against.
