Coinbase sets a three-day MiCA deadline for USDT in the EEA

Coinbase has given retail customers in the European Economic Area until 30 October to move fourteen tokens off the exchange. The list is USDT, PYUSD, USD1, DAI, PAX, GUSD, GYEN, BUST, UST, RAI, PAXG, MUSD, USDS and TGBP. Balances left behind get converted at market rates into Circle's USDC or another supported asset.

“Affected retail users in the European Economic Area must withdraw their holdings before the deadline or, where suitable, have their balances converted into Circle's USDC.”

The deadline is not Coinbase's idea. MiCA requires a stablecoin issuer to hold an authorisation to offer its token to European retail users, and the transitional period for that ran out on 1 July 2026 without being extended. What is happening this week is an exchange finishing a job the calendar started four months ago.

Fourteen tokens, and 88.7% of them is one

We measured what is actually being moved. Across the affected tokens we could price on 27 October, the total market capitalisation is about $205.5bn, and USDT alone accounts for $182.2bn of it, or 88.7%. USDC, the destination, stands at $71.0bn. Every other name on the list is a rounding error beside those two: USDS at $9.97bn, DAI at $4.53bn, the Trump-linked USD1 at $3.90bn, PayPal's PYUSD at $3.01bn, and PAXG, which is gold rather than a dollar at all, at $1.79bn. GUSD, USTC, USDP and RAI together do not reach $90m.

So the headline reads as fourteen tokens and the substance is one. European retail access to the largest stablecoin in the world is ending on an exchange, and the asset replacing it is 2.6 times smaller. Those are global figures and the EEA retail slice is far smaller, but the ratio between the two is what the rule is reshaping.

The two details nobody is repeating

Two details deserve more attention than they are getting. Assets deposited after 30 October will not be credited, cannot be traded or transferred, and are excluded from the automatic conversion; recovery, where possible at all, costs 5% of anything above $100 plus network fees. And UST is on the list, four and a half years after it stopped being worth a dollar, which says something about how long a ticker outlives the thing it named.

We counted the category in October at $64bn of daily volume, with USDT and USDC between them taking 96.3% of it. MiCA does not change that concentration, it relocates it: on regulated European venues the share that used to be USDT becomes USDC by rule rather than by preference. Whether the holders follow their balances or follow the token somewhere else is the part the next month answers.

Informational material, not investment advice. Market capitalisations were measured by us on 27 October 2026 and are global rather than EEA-only; four of the fourteen listed tickers had no reliable public price at the time of writing and are not in our total.
