Crypto ETF flows: bitcoin funds took $440m in four days, then came the hack
Crypto ETF flows went in opposite directions in the last full week of October. US spot bitcoin ETFs took in money for a fourth day in a row on Thursday 29 October, $17 million net, per Wu Blockchain. Spot ether ETFs lost $105 million that day, their fourth outflow in a row. The US market closed at 20:00 UTC. Five minutes later the first wallets of the Binance hack began to drain, so Thursday's numbers are the last ones from before it.
Four days in bitcoin funds
- Monday and Tuesday: about $286 million in, the rebound we counted on 28 October.
- Wednesday 28 October: $137 million in, per SoSoValue data reported by Cointelegraph.
- Thursday 29 October: $17 million in.
Four days brought about $440 million, against the $774 million that left over the last two sessions of the previous week. The October total for bitcoin funds turned positive on Wednesday at $111 million and stood near $128 million after Thursday, with one session left in the month.
Ether funds keep leaking
Ether ETFs lost $21 million on Wednesday and $105 million on Thursday. Cointelegraph put their October outflows at $1.35 billion through Wednesday, so the month now stands near $1.46 billion out.

The Fed held rates at 3.75% to 4% on Wednesday, and chair Kevin Warsh said inflation remains above the 2% target. On Wednesday the Fear & Greed index read 51, neutral.
What the hack changes
By 01:19 UTC on Friday bitcoin had dropped 4.9% to about $76,900 and ether 5.7% to $2,211, and the Fear & Greed index fell to 30. The Binance hack is the first test of the bitcoin streak: Friday's flows, due after the US close tonight, are the first ETF reading taken after the theft.
Our count
- Four days of bitcoin inflows covered 57% of the previous week's two-day exit.
- Thursday's $17 million is an eighth of Wednesday's $137 million. The streak was already slowing before the hack.
- Ether funds lost $126 million in two days while bitcoin funds took $154 million.
- From Wednesday to early Friday bitcoin fell 3.7% and ether 4.3%.
A net inflow means the funds created new shares and bought spot bitcoin to back them; an outflow means they redeemed shares and sold. On Wednesday, with the streak running, bitcoin traded at $79,848 and ether at $2,310, per CoinGecko as cited by Cointelegraph. By early Friday both sat lower, and whoever bought ETF shares on Wednesday or Thursday was holding a loss.
If Friday closes with an outflow, bitcoin funds end October with a smaller gain or a loss. Check the Friday total against $128 million: an outflow larger than that leaves October in the red for bitcoin ETFs.
Not investment advice: the piece describes fund flows. Daily figures come from SoSoValue via Cointelegraph and from Wu Blockchain, prices from CoinGecko.
