Google Dreambeans reaches India after US downloads fell 84% in October
Google has launched Dreambeans in India, the first market for the experimental AI app outside the United States, TechCrunch reported on 2 November. The app runs on Android and iOS and supports 13 Indian languages, among them Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali, as well as English.
Google moved less than two months after it opened Dreambeans to every eligible US user aged 18 and over in September. The app first appeared in June.
Dreambeans is multimodal AI that writes illustrated stories about your interests and your days without a prompt. It draws on data from Google Calendar, Gemini, Gmail, Photos, Search and YouTube. Google has since added its Veo video model, which animates images in some stories.
Gozde Oznur, a Google product manager, told TechCrunch the company picked India for strong user interest and a high overlap of people who use Gemini, Gmail and Google Photos.
Downloads so far
Sensor Tower estimates for the US:
- about 55,000 US downloads since June, roughly 63% of them in September;
- about 5,500 downloads in October, down 84% from the month before;
- about 29,000 downloads in the first 30 days after the September opening.
Sensor Tower put other apps' first 30 days at about 7.4 million downloads for Meta's Muse, 2.8 million for ChatGPT, 362,000 for Grok Bot and 155,000 for Claude. By our count, Muse got about 255 times as many installs as Dreambeans in the same window.
Language limits
You pick one language at a time, and Dreambeans cannot write a story that mixes them. In India many people speak Hinglish, a blend of Hindi and English, so the limit may cost Google users.
Your data and your memories
Dreambeans relies on Google's Personal Intelligence technology and the accounts you connect. Oznur said you can choose which services to connect, disconnect them and delete your Dreambeans data. If you delete the source data, Google also drops it from personalisation.
You can tell the app to avoid topics such as business information. Dreambeans works only with personal Gmail accounts, not enterprise ones, and only the account holder sees the stories.
Oznur admitted the app may bring up painful memories, for example a story about someone who has died. You can block subjects, much as Google Photos lets you. Google is also looking at ways to make Dreambeans act on what it learns, beyond stories and recommendations.
Download figures are Sensor Tower estimates, and Google has not published its own numbers.
