MARA bitcoin buyback: sold at $71,839, buying at $76,347
MARA Holdings bought 1,292 bitcoin for $98.64 million through FalconX's over-the-counter desk at an average of $76,347 a coin, u.today reports from Arkham Intelligence data. The company spent the first half of this year selling, and it is buying back dearer than it sold.

MARA bitcoin buyback: the round trip
The round trip in three lines:
- Sold in the first half of 2026: more than 20,880 BTC for about $1.5 billion, an average of $71,839 a coin.
- Bought this week: 1,292 BTC for $98.64 million, an average of $76,347 a coin.
- Difference: $4,508 more per coin, or 6.3%, on 6.19% of the volume it sold.
Hindsight is kinder than the headline suggests. The 20,880 coins MARA sold for $1.5 billion would fetch $1.58 billion at this morning's $75,906, so the whole disposal cost about $85 million in timing, or 5.7% of the proceeds. That is a bad quarter, not a catastrophe, and the money did a job: it retired convertible bonds maturing in 2030 and 2031 ahead of schedule and paid for data centres.
The purchase price carries the more interesting number. CoinShares put the average cost of mining one bitcoin for listed miners at $75,500 in the second quarter, while the coin ended that quarter at $58,400, which means the industry was spending 29.3% more to produce a bitcoin than a bitcoin was worth. MARA has now bought coins at $76,347, which is $847 above that mining cost, or 1.1%. Buying and mining have converged to the same price.
That convergence is the quiet argument for the whole pivot. If a coin costs the same to buy as to make, the mining rig stops being a discount and starts being a business with capital expenditure attached. Thiel's answer was to sell the coins, keep the power contracts and point the electricity at customers who pay more for it. MARA is repurposing sites with Starwood Capital toward roughly 1 GW of capacity, with stated plans past 2.5 GW.
What the balance sheet holds
What the balance sheet looks like now. MARA reports 38,689 BTC, worth $2.937 billion this morning, of which on-chain data puts only 9,658 in operating wallets and the remaining 29,031 with a custodian. Against a market capitalisation of $4.34 billion, the bitcoin is 67.7% of the company. Put differently, each of the 386.3 million shares carries $7.60 of bitcoin behind an $11.24 share price, leaving $3.64 for the mining fleet, the data centre build and the debt.
Shareholders have not enjoyed the transition. MARA trades at $11.24, down 35.9% over a year, against a twelve-month range of $6.73 to $22.84. We ran the same arithmetic on BitMine's premium to its ether last week and found the opposite sign, which is what makes the comparison useful: the market pays up for one treasury and discounts the other.
Into two macro events
Context for the timing. June saw hashprice fall to an all-time low of $27.7 per PH/s per day, Core Scientific paid $41.9 million simply to cancel an order for 15 EH/s of machines, and smaller operators have been winding mining down entirely. Buying $98.64 million of bitcoin, which is 2.27% of MARA's market value and 12.3% of its trailing annual revenue, is a modest bet by a company that still has to explain why it sold ten times that.
It also lands the day after the CLARITY Act died in the Senate and hours before a Federal Reserve decision priced at 87.5% for a rate rise, which we measured this morning. A miner adding to its treasury into that is either confident or hedging its own pivot, and the filing will not say which.
