Police robots: 1,300 on Chinese streets, one in a New York storeroom

Police robots are on the street in numbers now, and the place that tried hardest to make headlines out of them has none. Chinese cities run more than 1,300, Xinhua reports. New York ran one, for two months, and put it in a storeroom.

Police robots that are working

The Chinese rollout in three lines:

• China has deployed more than 1,300 police robots since early 2025 and has signed for 1,000 more.
• Wuhu started on 10 January 2026, and Shenzhen, Shanghai and Hangzhou followed.
• Hangzhou put 15 of them on downtown intersections on 1 May.

The robots doing this work are narrow. In Wuhu the machine is an Intelligent Police Unit R001 from AiMOGA Robotics and it directs pedestrians and cyclists. In Hangzhou the fifteen units manage non-motorised traffic, give directions and assist human officers. None of them arrests anybody. That is the design decision that made deployment possible rather than a limitation somebody is apologising for.

The one that did not

New York went the other way and the arithmetic is instructive. The NYPD leased a 420-pound Knightscope K5 at $9 an hour to patrol the Times Square subway station from midnight to six. Six hours a night across two months comes to about $3,240. The city was not defeated by cost.

It was defeated by the job. The robot carried cameras and a button that connects to a live agent, and it could do nothing on site. Two officers escorted it on every shift, so the labour-saving machine consumed two salaries it was meant to free. The pilot ended, the robot sat among cardboard boxes in a vacant storefront, and the city kept paying a six-month contract, local reporting found.

The gap is 2,300 units against one, and price explains none of it. One programme asked a machine to replace presence, which is the part of policing that only works when the thing present can act. The other asked it to stand at an intersection and point, which is a task a camera and a speaker genuinely perform.

What it says about the rest of AI

For anyone watching the AI build-out this is the more useful lesson than the rhetoric around it. Jensen Huang argued this week that safety is an engineering problem and the market will sort it out. A street robot is an AI agent with a body, which makes it the cleanest test of that claim available, and what sorted these ones out was narrowing the task. The hardware underneath is the same supply chain now being negotiated between SK hynix and Intel, and a DeepMind researcher puts the odds of AI takeover at one in three. Traffic direction in Hangzhou is a long way from that, which is rather the point.
