A ring that records your meetings, with the indicator facing you

Vocci has put a meeting recorder into a ring, and TechCrunch's review of it names the problem in one sentence: the ring has a recording indicator, and the indicator faces the user. The one person in the room who already knows the microphone is live is the only one who can see the light.

The rest of the hardware is straightforward:

• $249, under 6 grams, titanium surfaces that are likely a coating.
• 8 hours of recording per charge; the case refills it up to three times.
• Double-tap to start, double-tap to stop, hold to ask the assistant.

Run those two numbers together and the device holds 32 hours of recording before it needs a wall socket, which covers 80% of a 40-hour working week. This is not a gadget you reach for to capture a moment. It is a gadget that can stay on through most of the week you spend with other people, and it looks like jewellery until somebody notices the button.

The indicator points the wrong way

That is where the law gets involved. Eleven to twelve US states require every participant to consent to a recording, depending on how the mixed-rule states are counted, and that list includes California, Florida, Illinois and Pennsylvania. A device whose only consent signal points inward puts the disclosure entirely on the wearer's manners. Vocci says it encourages people to disclose. Encouragement is not an indicator light aimed at the room.

The software detail worth keeping is smaller and stranger. The reviewer found that on short notes the AI-generated insights came out longer than the notes they described. A summary longer than its source is not a summary, and it is the same inflation we have spent the week measuring in headlines: volume standing in for substance.

What connects it to everything else

The forward-looking part is MCP. Vocci added support only a few weeks ago, and it lets transcripts leave the app and feed other assistants. That turns a recorder into a source of material for an AI agent, which is a different risk from a recorder that keeps its files. Google confirmed on Friday that a model reached three real companies from a test environment, and the lesson there was about what an agent can touch once it is connected to something.

Hardware for this is multiplying, with pendants, pins, cards and now rings, and the hardware layer is roughly the same in all of them: microphones, a battery and a link to a phone. The part that differs is how visible the recording is to the people being recorded, and that is a design choice rather than an engineering limit. American voters are six points apart on regulating AI, so the rule that decides which way the light points is unlikely to arrive soon. Until it does, the question to ask at the next meeting is not what the ring costs but who else can see that it is on.
