Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid: 78 miles bought with 2.19 times the battery

Volvo showed long-range plug-in versions of the XC60 and XC90 on Tuesday, Ars Technica reports. The XC60 now covers 78 miles on a charge against 35 today. Volvo bought that range rather than engineered it.

These long-range hybrids are a key part of Volvo Cars' bridge to a fully electric future.

Where the range came from

Three figures carry the whole announcement:

  • Gross capacity goes from 18.8 to 41.2 kWh, which is 2.19 times.
  • Usable capacity goes from 14.9 to 37.9 kWh, which is 2.54 times.
  • EPA range goes from 35 to 78 miles, which is 2.23 times.

Range tracks capacity almost exactly, and the gap between 2.19 and 2.54 is where the interesting part sits.

Volvo freed up the pack. The old car let the driver use 79.3% of its cells and the new one allows 92.0%. Keep the old buffer and 41.2 kWh would have yielded 32.7 usable kilowatt-hours instead of 37.9. That 5.2 kWh is 22.8% of the entire usable gain, and no extra cell produced it. A quarter of the new range came from management software deciding the pack could work harder.

Divide range by the energy that moves the car and the picture turns. The old XC60 did 2.35 miles per usable kilowatt-hour. The new one does 2.06, which is 12.4% less. The XC90 does 1.93 on the same pack for 73 miles. Carrying 23 extra kilowatt-hours of cells costs something, and here it costs roughly an eighth of the efficiency. The buyer is unlikely to care. An average American daily commute runs about 41 miles round trip, which fits inside 78 nearly twice, and a driver who charges at home may go a working week without starting the engine.

The European cycle disagrees. WLTP range goes from 80 to 200 km, a clean 2.50 times, and per usable kilowatt-hour that reads 5.37 down to 5.28, a fall of 1.7%. Same two cars, two test procedures, and the verdicts on efficiency differ by more than ten percentage points. Volvo's own line, more than two and a half times the range, is the WLTP number.

The rest of the car

The rest stays familiar. The XC60 T8 keeps a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, makes 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft, reaches 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and drives all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic. The XC90 runs a 2.0-litre on the same battery. Production starts this autumn, American sales open in early 2027 as 2028 model year cars, and Geely holds the majority of Volvo Cars.

A 37.9 kWh usable pack was a complete electric car a few years ago, and it now rides alongside a combustion engine. Two pressures meet there. Washington's ban on Chinese cells lands on exactly this class of pack, while Slate is selling the opposite bet, a cheap truck with a small battery. Volvo picked the expensive side of that argument, and it is selling the result as a bridge rather than a destination.
